Idle vs Clicker vs Incremental Games: The Difference

Idle vs Clicker vs Incremental Games: The Difference

The three terms overlap heavily. A clicker game is one where tapping is the main way you earn. An idle game is one where progress keeps going without you, even while the game is closed. Incremental is the umbrella over both: any game built around numbers that grow through upgrades. Most mobile games in the genre are all three at once, starting as clickers, becoming idle, and staying incremental throughout.

The clearest sign of how blurry the lines are comes from the developers themselves. Egg, Inc.’s listing calls it “an incremental (clicker) game at its core,” and it’s usually described as an idle game too.

What is a clicker game? #

In a clicker game, tapping is how you make money. Cookie Clicker, which started as a free browser game in 2013, is the template: you click a giant cookie, buy things with the cookies, and upgrade your clicks.

Pure clicking doesn’t last long in most games, though. Upgrades multiply what each tap earns, and automated producers soon outpace your thumb. In Bunny Bakery, for example, tapping the chef bunny earns 1 coin at first, and five tap upgrades eventually make each tap worth 600 coins before other bonuses. That sounds like a lot until your bakery stations are making millions a second on their own.

Some games keep tapping central for longer. Clicker Heroes is a tapping RPG where you ascend your main hero to grow stronger with each run.

What is an idle game? #

In an idle game, the main source of progress is automation that keeps running without you. AdVenture Capitalist has you hire managers so your businesses run themselves. Idle Miner Tycoon does the same with managers for each part of a mine.

The defining feature is offline progress: when you reopen the game, it pays you for the time you were away. Most games cap it. Bunny Bakery, for instance, pays 50% of your normal income for up to 8 hours away. We explain why caps exist in how idle games work.

Idle games suit people who want a game to check on rather than sit with. A few minutes several times a day is often the best way to play.

What is an incremental game? #

“Incremental” describes the core of the whole genre: numbers that go up, through upgrades that make the numbers go up faster. The term puts the focus on systems and optimization rather than tapping or waiting.

Incremental games can look very different from each other:

  • Universal Paperclips is almost entirely text and numbers. Its developer calls it an “idle/management/strategy/sim.”
  • Antimatter Dimensions stacks layer after layer of systems, starting with reaching Infinity and spending Infinity points.
  • Exponential Idle grows your money through equations. You can tap the equation or, in the developer’s words, “simply let the time follow its course.”

Not every incremental game is idle. Some ask for active decisions and reward attention more than absence.

How the three overlap #

Most games in the genre move through all three styles in a single playthrough. Bunny Bakery shows the arc clearly:

  1. The first few minutes are a clicker. You tap Cinnamon the chef bunny to afford your first Bread Stand.
  2. Then it becomes idle. Stations bake coins every second, and the bakery keeps earning while the game is closed.
  3. It’s incremental throughout. Upgrades at 5, 25, 50, 100 and 200 of each station double output, and a prestige system trades your bakery for Sparkle Stars that make the next run faster.

Prestige is the part that makes most of these games truly long-term. We cover it on its own in what prestige means in idle games.

Close cousins #

A few neighboring labels come up often:

  • Tycoon games give the same loop a business theme. AdVenture Capitalist and Idle Miner Tycoon are idle tycoons. See what is a tycoon game.
  • Idle RPGs like Tap Titans 2 and Idle Slayer wrap the loop in fantasy combat, with heroes and gear instead of buildings.
  • Merge games combine items to make better ones. Cats & Soup: Magic Recipe, for example, moves the original’s idle cats into a merge format.

Which style suits you? #

  • You like to stay busy with your hands: pick a clicker-heavy game, such as Clicker Heroes.
  • You want a game that runs itself: pick an idle game, such as AdVenture Capitalist or Idle Miner Tycoon.
  • You love systems and big numbers: pick an incremental, such as Antimatter Dimensions or Exponential Idle.
  • You want a bit of everything in a cozy package: Bunny Bakery or Cats & Soup.

Frequently asked questions #

Both. It’s a clicker by name and in its first minutes, becomes idle once your buildings are doing most of the work, and is incremental throughout.

What is the difference between idle and incremental games? #

Idle describes progress that continues without you. Incremental describes numbers that grow through stacked upgrades. Most idle games are incremental, but some incremental games want active play rather than waiting.

Do clicker games require constant tapping? #

Rarely for long. Most add automation early so your producers take over, and many offer temporary auto-tap boosts. Tapping usually matters most in the first few minutes of a run.

What is the best incremental game on mobile? #

For deep systems, Antimatter Dimensions or Exponential Idle. For a one-time purchase with no ads, Universal Paperclips at $1.99.
