2. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete #
Nintendo’s one-time-purchase version of Pocket Camp bundles the items and events released over seven years into one game. You run a campsite, fish, catch bugs and decorate with more than 10,000 items. Nintendo’s listing says a constant internet connection isn’t required, though the game may occasionally connect.
Wrong for: anyone expecting a free game. It costs $19.99 up front.
3. Alba: A Wildlife Adventure #
From ustwo games, the studio behind Monument Valley. Alba spends a summer on her grandparents’ Mediterranean island, spotting wildlife and cleaning up the litter that threatens it. It’s short, sweet and kind, and it’s part of Apple Arcade, so there are no ads or in-app purchases.
Wrong for: Android users and anyone who doesn’t want a subscription. Apple Arcade costs $6.99 a month.
4. Townscaper #
You tap to place colored blocks on the water, and the game turns them into houses, arches, stairways and gardens. The developer’s own description is “No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty.” That’s exactly the appeal.
Wrong for: anyone who needs a goal to stay interested.
5. A Little to the Left #
A tidy puzzle game: sort, stack and straighten household objects while a mischievous cat keeps messing things up. You can try it free, and a single in-app purchase opens the full set of 100-plus puzzles.
Wrong for: people who find “almost right” more stressful than satisfying.
6. Neko Atsume 2 #
Put out toys and snacks, close the app, and come back to see which cats visited. The sequel adds a “Going Out” mode for visiting other players’ yards, and its Catbook records every cat you’ve photographed.

7. Cats & Soup #
